Three years in prison requested against Fethi Gherras

The trial of suspended former national coordinator of the Social and Democratic Movement (MDS), Fethi Gherras, was held Tuesday before the court of Hussein Dey, in Algiers. Following the hearing and the pleadings, the prosecutor requested a three-year prison sentence, in addition to a fine of 300,000 dinars. The case has been adjourned for deliberation until the hearing on October 21, 2025, according to the defense.

Fethi Gherras is being prosecuted on two charges: Insulting a constitutional body and spreading false information among the public likely to harm public security. Both charges fall under articles 146 and 196 bis of the penal code.

Arrested on September 29, 2025, Fethi Gherras was brought before the prosecutor of the Hussein Dey court following a night in police custody. The public prosecutor ordered his immediate appearance. The case was first postponed to October 7, 2025, with the defendant placed under judicial supervision. The trial was postponed a second time to October 14, 2025.

This is not the first time Fethi Gherras has appeared before the courts. He has faced several trials during the years that followed the 2019 Hirak. In some cases, he was sentenced to prison and has been incarcerated.
